February SFPE Dinner Meeting

Fiber Optic Distributed Temperature Sensing

Presented by

Rick Jeffress ARM, CET, CFPS, CHRS

Director, Business Development – Fike Corporation

The fiber optic-based Linear Heat Detector (LHD) has multiple advantages in comparison to conventional fire detection systems or non-fiber optic LHD. One single passive fiber covers a long range up to 10 km, whereas traditional solutions would need many sensors as well as individual systems. The sampling interval is less than 3 feet, which allows accurate event localization and permits quick activation of countermeasures in an emergency situation. Because of its low laser power, LHD is well-suited for hazardous environments such as those found in chemical plants, coal storage facilities, mining conveyor belts, or other facilities requiring ATEX/IECEx certification.

Rick resides in Houston, TX and has over 29 years of fire protection experience in land-based and marine/offshore special hazard fire protection. He is currently Director of Business Development at Fike Corporation for specialized detection products.

NICET certified at Level III in Fire Alarm and Special Hazards Suppression Systems, NFPA Certified Fire Protection Specialist and Certified Hazard Recognition Specialist certifications from the National Fire Protection Association, secondary education at University of Maryland and in Risk Management at The Institutes.

Rick is currently on the following committees:

  • ISO/TC 21/SC 3/WG 24 committee “Installation Standard for Video Image Detection”
  • UL 2684 Standard committee on video analytics and thermal radiometry tor Fire Detection
  • LASH FIRE European Commission research project for fire detection on car carriers and vehicle ferries
